Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America
The Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) electric vehicle manufacturing facility and its partnership with LG Energy Solutions (LGES) on the joint venture (JV) battery facility represents an estimated $7.59 billion in investment and will create 8,500 new jobs for the region over the next eight years.
At a May 20, 2022, signing ceremony, Governor Brian P. Kemp and Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Euisun announced that Hyundai Motor Group will open its first fully dedicated electric vehicle (EV) and battery manufacturing facility in the State of Georgia. Original plans called for $5.54 billion investment in a facility which will produce a diverse range of innovative, fully electric vehicles (EV) and a new battery manufacturing facility.
On May 26, 2023, Hyundai Motor Group and LGES announced their partnership on the JV battery facility, further detailing the cost estimates of the battery cell manufacturing JV within the projects.
On August 31, 2023, HMGMA announced it will expand the original scope of the battery JV by an additional $2 billion, resulting in the current investment value of more than $4.3 billion for the battery JV alone. This expansion will create another 400 new jobs. The 30 GWh facility will be able to support the production of 300,000 units of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis EVs annually at full operations.
Additionally, more than $2.5 billion in capital investment and approximately 6,700 jobs have been announced by HMGMA suppliers in 10 counties across the state. This more than doubles the additional $1 billion investment by suppliers that was originally anticipated.
These suppliers join Georgia’s growing EV ecosystem as the state adapts for a seamless transition to sustainable technology. By fostering fully integrated ecosystems through its support for organic partnerships, Georgia is committed to developing the entire EV supply chain and establishing a closed-loop EV ecosystem in the state.

Why Georgia?
In choosing Georgia, Hyundai Motor Company cited speed-to-market, workforce, and the state’s ability to meet company carbon neutrality standards. Additionally, Georgia boasts a large, expanding network of Hyundai subsidiaries and suppliers.
Georgia is committed to providing a diverse and skilled workforce for its industries. In February 2023, Georgia Quick Start broke ground on its customized training training center at the Metaplant site. HMGMA has also partnered with local technical colleges to prepare students for entry-level employment at the Metaplant. Electrical Vehicle Professional Technical Certificate of Credit (EVP TCC) training is available at Coastal Pines Technical College’s Baxley and Waycross campuses, Southeastern Technical College’s Vidalia campus, Savannah Technical College, and Ogeechee Technical College.
Also central to the selection of the Bryan County Megasite was its close proximity to the Port of Savannah. With connections to the port by both rail and highway, Hyundai will be able to access global markets quickly and efficiently. As evidenced by record-breaking global commerce and trade numbers, Georgia has the tools companies need to meet consumers where they are.
