Georgia Film Trivia: Sweet Home Alabama

Despite its name, the 2002 romantic comedy Sweet Home Alabama featuring Reese Witherspoon was mostly filmed in Georgia. The film received compliments from fans and critics alike for Witherspoon’s charming performance, and it grossed $130 million in the United States by the end of its run in movie theaters.

Sweet Home Alabama tells the story of a young Melanie Smooter (Reese Witherspoon) who escapes her hometown of Pigeon Creek, Alabama, to live in New York City. On her way to becoming a socialite, Melanie begins to question her decisions and has a yearning to reconnect with her Southern roots.

• The film used the rolling hills of the Georgia International Horse Park at Bald Rock Meadows for the scenes featuring Civil War reenactors.

• The house that Melanie pretends is her home is actually Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum at Berry College in Mount Berry, Georgia.

• Downtown scenes in the movie were filmed in Crawfordville in Taliaferro County.

• Jake’s (Josh Lucas) glassblowing shop was filmed in Fayette County, Georgia, at an old grist mill called Starr’s Mill.
