Exports continue to grow despite contraction of U.S. exports in 2023

Calendar year 2023 marked the third record-breaking year in a row for Georgia exports, with companies exporting $49.7 billion in goods to 215 unique countries and territories. This impact reflects the vitality and diversity of the state’s economy.

Despite U.S. exports contracting in 2023, Georgia exports have achieved sustained growth for the last decade, increasing 26% since 2014. Leading customers for Georgia products include Canada, Mexico, China, Germany, Singapore, the Netherlands, Belgium, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, and Poland. Georgia currently ranks 12th among U.S. states for dollar value of exports.  

Export growth in 2023 was led by global aerospace and defense sales, which increased 20% compared to 2022. Georgia ranks fifth in the U.S. for aerospace exports. Aerospace products remained Georgia’s No. 1 export, exceeding $11.1 billion. Top aerospace markets for Georgia included Singapore, Germany, Poland, Hong Kong, and Belgium. 

Motor vehicles were the second largest export from Georgia in 2023, exceeding $4.1 billion, as the Port of Brunswick also announced a record year for autos. Top markets for automotive exports were Canada, the United Arab Emirates, China, Mexico, and Germany.   

Georgia’s agricultural exports exceeded $5.8 billion in 2023, to top customers China, Canada, Mexico, Pakistan, and Turkey. Poultry exports increased by 4%, totaling $1.6 billion. Other leading products included cotton, forestry products, and peanuts. Exports of tree nuts, including pecans, grew by 46% year over year. Georgia ranks eighth in the U.S. for agricultural exports.  

Total Trade in 2023

Total trade exceeded $186.3 billion, spanning 222 unique trading partners. Georgia’s logistics assets have facilitated 51% growth in bilateral trade over the past 10 years. The state’s top 10 trading partners in 2023 included China, Mexico, South Korea, Canada, Germany, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, United Kingdom, and Singapore.  

Georgia’s international representatives play a critical role supporting state’s ongoing trade growth. In 2023, 67% of exports and 71% of total trade involved strategic markets where long-term representatives support Georgia’s global trade efforts daily.
