GEORGIA’S AMAZON HQ2 BID

When Amazon announced in September 2017 that it wanted to open a second headquarters, the Georgia Department of Economic Development partnered with other economic development entities, the private sector, academia, and communities across the state to land the project. While Amazon unfortunately did not select Georgia as the location for HQ2, the state’s citizens can be proud of a collaborative, cooperative, and thorough recruitment process that transcended agencies, organizations, companies and cities.

The critical component of this project process for the Georgia Project Team was providing specifically requested information through two Requests for Proposals (RFPs) that were issued by Amazon. The Georgia Project Team elected to develop and utilize two unique, password protected websites to provide the team’s collective response to the two RFPs. Those sites are no longer password protected in an effort to provide transparency, insight and information regarding the project.

The following statements were issued on November 13, 2018 in response to Amazon’s announcement:

governor nathan deal“The Amazon HQ2 project is the epitome of the state’s partnership approach to economic development,” said Governor Deal. “I couldn’t be more proud of the efforts that were put forward by our state economic development team, the Metro Atlanta Chamber, Invest Atlanta, Georgia Power, Georgia EMC, Electric Cities of Georgia and other partners around the state. While it is unfortunate that we will not be moving forward with HQ2, we are excited to have been named a finalist and are very proud of the recent Amazon announcements that took place over the last year in Georgia.

With more than 4,000 Georgians already employed by Amazon in the state, we look forward to continued growth and future projects with Amazon. Working together through this process has made us stronger, enabling us to announce thousands of technology-related jobs for Metro Atlanta in the last year including well-known companies such as Salesforce, BlackRock, Pandora, Starbucks and others. Even with today’s news, Georgia remains the No. 1 State for Business in the U.S. and we will continue to work hard to grow jobs and investment in all corners of our state.”

Governor Nathan Deal

keisha lance bottoms“We enjoyed the opportunity to be part of Amazon’s search for a new headquarters location, as it gave us yet another opportunity to share with the world all that Atlanta has to offer. We remain a proud host city to Amazon’s current Atlanta offices and wish the company well in its new cities of choice.”

hala moddelmog“We couldn’t be prouder of our collaborative effort to tell metro Atlanta’s remarkable story. We are a hub for world class talent, culture and innovation that is attracting jobs at a record pace. Through the HQ2 process, we were excited to introduce Amazon to ChooseATL, our ongoing movement that is proving to attract and retain talent. More broadly, the spotlight on our region over the past several months showed the world how Georgia became the number one state for doing business. We are clear on metro Atlanta’s story and well-positioned for even more wins in the future.”

Hala Moddelmog, President and CEO of the Metro Atlanta Chamber
