Port of Savannah

“We are very happy to plant our flag in Savannah. Plastic Express has been searching for a strategic opportunity in every viable port location in the Southeast for a few years. The impressiveness of the Port of Savannah’s operations along with Georgia’s welcoming business climate has made Savannah the clear and obvious choice for us.”
Ray Hufnagel, Plastic Express President and CEO
“We are excited to expand our team in the State of Georgia as we continue to scale our logistics operations to support the rapid growth of our business. The State of Georgia and the Savannah Economic Development Authority have been great partners to us. We look forward to contributing to economic development in the region with the creation of 1,000 new jobs and the opening of a new, state-of-the-art facility in Savannah.”
James Savarese, Chief operating officer of Wayfair
"The Savannah region's land availability, excellent workforce, the Savannah Hilton Head International Airport and the state's expansive infrastructure were the major factors of why Gulfstream Aerospace chose Savannah in 1967, and for more than 50 years those same reasons have contributed to their continuing to choose to call Savannah home, including today's announcement. We have formed a great partnership and are deeply grateful for their continued investment in Savannah and our citizens."
Kevin Jackson, Chairman of the board of directors for the Savannah Economic Development Authority

Georgia Exporter Spotlight: Blue Force Gear

When Blue Force Gear decided to go after international markets and opportunities, they used the Georgia Department of Economic Development’s export services as a resource, and leveraged their collaboration with other export promotion agencies. “The biggest benefit of working with GDEcD’s international trade team has come from attending international trade shows with GDEcD. Being able to co-exhibit in a Georgia, USA booth gives us a more affordable entry point for high-profile international shows. Many of the events we’ve attended with GDEcD have resulted in several long-term customers.” In addition, GDEcD was a great resource for finding and setting up meetings and vetting potential leads prior to a show, as well as providing due diligence reports and market research, making it easier to be successful abroad.

Women in Manufacturing

The 2019 Women in Manufacturing (WiM) Savannah Shines event highlighted the expansive presence of manufacturing in Chatham County. To understand how impactful the Port of Savannah is on the region and country, the group toured the Georgia Port Authority and learned about the expansion plans that will put the Port in the running for the #1 busiest port in the world. The Georgia Port Authority plays a significant role for manufacturers in Savannah and across the nation to be able to import and export products. By sharing best practices and gaining exposure to other types of manufacturing, participants can become more competitive and grow their network and business alliances.

Gulfstream Aerospace

Gulfstream, a native Georgia company whose headquarters has been located in Savannah since 1967, designs, develops, manufactures, markets, services and supports the world's most technologically advanced business-jet aircraft. Aerospace products are Georgia’s No. 1 export ($8.3B) and the state’s second largest manufacturing industry generating a $64B economic impact. Key to this strength and continuing growth is the collaboration among leaders from the industry, academia and government.

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems

With increasing sales and demand for combustor components and large frame gas turbines, Mitsubishi initiated the search for its new facility in 2007. They would need a site large enough to manufacture, maintain and transport large gas and steam turbines.

The MHPSA team developed a criteria matrix against which to judge all the sites under consideration. This matrix included some of the following: valuable tax and land incentive package from local and state governments, location in close proximity to a major deep-water port system, close proximity to intensive rail system, qualified and extensive technical labor pool, and customized workforce training.
