Ames McGill Barnett was born and raised in Washington, GA. After graduating from Washington-Wilkes High School in 1994, Ames earned his degree in Civil Engineering Technology at Georgia Southern University in 1999. Ames served as Pledge Educator of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
Ames is President/Owner of Barnett Southern Corporation, a heavy civil site contractor. Barnett Southern was named “Big Business of the Year” by the Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce in 2014. He was elected to Washington’s city council from 2008-2012 and was elected Mayor in 2012, and was just re-elected Mayor this past fall (2015).
Ames was in the 2011 Leadership Georgia class and served as a Program Chair in 2012. He also serves as President for Region 7 of GMA/Georgia Municipal Association. Ames was named “Citizen of the Year” in 2015 by the W-W Chamber of Commerce Members.
Ames is married to Ashley Barnett, former Tourism Director for Washington-Wilkes and has two sons, Porter, age 10 and Turner, almost 2. They are active in Kiokee Baptist Church where they serve in Children’s Ministry.
