Sports

There are lots of advantages to living in and visiting Georgia. Climate is one, year-round sports is another.

How big are sports in Georgia? We know there are more than a few Georgians who’ll tell you that football is their life. But whether the topic is football, baseball, basketball or yes, even hockey, you’ll quickly discover Georgians love their sports and their teams.

When it comes to the professional sports, no team is more popular than "America's Team", the Atlanta Braves, who play championship-caliber baseball in their home at Turner Field. In professional football one of the toughest tickets to find is for the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons who play before sellout crowds in the Georgia Dome.

When it comes to the foul line or the blue line, join local fans as they flock to Phillips Arena to follow both the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA and the Atlanta Thrashers of the NHL. Whether you prefer the hard wood or the hard ice, come experience the excitement of world-class sports in the heart of downtown Atlanta.

For sports enthusiasts with octane in their veins, Atlanta Motor Speedway, located just a short-drive south of the city, is a race-fans paradise. With two NEXTEL Cup race weekends each year, accompanying Busch and Craftsman Truck Series races, as well as a full slate of Legends and Drag racing events, AMS is a one-stop-shop for all things high-speed.

With a full lineup of professional sport franchises in Georgia the surge in each team’s popularity has been electrifying. The continued growth in demographic and economic numbers is a sure sign that Georgia is a winner in the world of sports.

If it’s minor league baseball that catches your fancy, there’s no better team to follow than the Rome Braves, a farm club owned by the Atlanta Braves. You’ll get a sneak preview of tomorrow’s stars today as you sit in the stands and enjoy the simple pleasures of America’s favorite pastime.

From the professional field to the collegiate one, Georgia is also home to many successful college athletic programs. The University of Georgia, Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern University stir the fan frenzy and tailgating crowds each fall with their successful football teams. And, as the crossroads of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Atlanta annually serves as host to national and conference championships, including the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and the SEC Basketball Championships.

For the classic sports fan, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in Macon is an absolute must. Come visit the home of the state’s “best of the best” in sports. Relive great moments in sports from over 300 inductees including Hank Aaron, Bobby Jones, Ty Cobb, Herschel Walker, John Heisman and Bill Elliott. Recall the buzzer-beating shots and unbelievable putts that fill the “Great Moments in Georgia Sports,” which features superstar high school, college, professional and Olympic athletes with ties to Georgia.

When it comes to sports, Georgia plays to win.
