View Georgia Regional Map The rural southwestern region of Georgia is full of stories in each of its intriguing small towns, its woodlands and its rivers. Tour plantations and historic farms and relive Georgia’s historic past. For those with a more adventurous spirit, a visit to Wild Adventures will provide thrills and chills.
The Blue and Grey Museum in Fitzgerald showcases artifacts from the Civil War period that are native to the community. Fitzgerald’s information office provides help in navigating the best sites to explore along the city’s historic downtown area.
The Flint Riverquarium, located in Albany, tells the story of the Flint River and the mysterious blue-hole springs that help create it. The 175,000-gallon, 22-foot deep, open-air Blue Hole is filled with the fish, reptiles and plants found in the Flint River’s ecosystem.
The Georgia Agrirama in Tifton is a 19th century living history museum where costumed interpreters enact Georgia’s rural heritage amid the backdrop of two working farmsteads, a cotton gin, saw mill, grist mill, print shop, drug store, Masonic Lodge, Victorian home, steam train and a country store.
The Murals of Milltown adorn the buildings of downtown Lakeland and capture life-size scenes of 1920s culture and style. Nearby Banks Lake’s tranquil waters and shores served as the setting for the Burt Reynolds film “Gator.”
The Parks at Chehaw outside Albany is one of just two AZA-accredited zoos in Georgia. Stroll scenic boardwalks through cypress swamps and see natural habitat exhibits with native and exotic animals such as African black rhinos, cheetahs, zebras, flamingos and more. Kids will love Ben’s Barnyard & Children’s Farm. A bicycle motorcross (BMX) track is also located in the park.
Pebble Hill Plantation, founded in the early 19th century in Thomasville, is a home rich in both art and history, and serves as a prime example of a Southern shooting plantation. The grounds offer pines and magnolias along lush green lawns and gardens. The stable complex is distinguished by intricate serpentine-decorated walls and showcases a collection of antique carriages.
South Georgia Motorsports Park in Cecil hosts a wide range of weekly events for motorsport enthusiasts, including monster truck shows, swap meets and motorcycle day. Tiered seats can accommodate 6,000 fans, with VIP booths on top of the stands. The 4,100-foot dragway sits on one side of the stands and a half-mile oval track for stock cars is on the other side of the complex.
Still Pond Vineyard & Winery is just south of Albany, past fields of peanuts, corn and cotton, on a Georgia clay road. The plantation consists of acres of Muscadine vines that produce 10 different Muscadine wines and serve as a lush green grape island in the middle of the southern Georgia plains.
Wild Adventures Theme Park in Valdosta has new shows and rides for all ages. The addition of Splash Island Water Park serves the traveler looking to cool off during the hot summer months. Wild Adventures also features live performances in original shows and concerts with top performing entertainment from country, rock, pop and gospel.
