Andersonville

Located in southwest Georgia, Andersonville is a town deeply rooted in Civil War history. Formerly known as Camp Sumter, Andersonville was one of the largest Confederate military prisons in use during the conflict. Andersonville is now a community filled with awe-inspiring landmarks and notable charm.

Visit the Andersonville National Historic Site and take a step back in history to the monumental conflicts of the Civil War. Learn about the horrors of war as you travel through the site’s Civil War prison, Andersonville National Cemetery and the National Prisoner of War Museum. Each site offers its own story and serves as a reminder of those who’ve fought for our nation.

Andersonville’s National Prisoner of War Museum opened in 1998 and is the only memorial to honor all American prisoners of war throughout our nation’s history (Please note: the museum reopened in mid-February following a three-month maintenance project) . Walk through the museum and learn about the important role they’ve played. As you hear their stories, you’ll begin to understand the extreme sacrifices these soldiers made while serving our country. This museum is a powerful display of honor, courage and sacrifice, and is a place that should not be missed.

Although Andersonville is famous for its Civil War past, you’ll find plenty of reasons to visit this charming Georgia town. With a quaint downtown brimming with historic homes, museums, antique shopping and plenty of fun activities, you’ll take home more than just history from Andersonville – you’ll take home a lifetime of memories.

So on your next vacation to Georgia, visit Andersonville and experience a unique blend of history, heritage and hospitality.
