Cumberland Island

As Georgia’s largest and southernmost barrier island, Cumberland Island is known for its well preserved habitat, including more than 17 miles of sugar-white beaches. Originally owned by the Carnegie Family, you can now enjoy the lasting heritage of Cumberland Island as a protected National Seashore.

Since access to Cumberland is via ferry, only a limited number of people are allowed to visit each day. That fact makes this secluded getaway one of Georgia’s top attractions.

Explore the island’s complex ecological system and discover why it’s well known for sea turtles, wild turkeys, abundant shore birds, dune fields, maritime forests and salt marshes. Venture deeper in the forests and catch a glimpse of the island's numerous whitetail deer, raccoons, bull alligators and armadillos.

On the beach, you’ll watch shorebirds such as sandpipers, sea gulls, and osprey hunt for their latest meal. Loggerhead turtles have chosen the deserted beaches of Cumberland to come ashore and lay their eggs. But these endangered species aren’t the only ones who frequent these coveted beaches. People from around the world escape to Cumberland Island beaches for secluded holiday getaways. In fact, the Travel Channel named Cumberland Island “One of America’s Ten Best Beaches” in 2005.

Cumberland Island is also home to one of Georgia’s most unique luxury accommodations. One of the Carnegie’s homes, built on the island in 1901, has been transformed into a small luxury inn – the Greyfield Inn. Enjoy a luxurious stay in this grand and graceful mansion that’s finely decorated and set apart by family heirlooms and antiques.

Cumberland Island remains a beautiful, pristine location where you can enjoy cool breezes, clear water and a tranquil environment. Come to Georgia and experience this one-of-a-kind secluded treasure.
