Macon

The history and soul of Georgia are alive in Macon. It’s home to some of the nation’s most well-preserved antebellum mansions, celebrations of Georgia’s music and sports legacies, and festivals that draw visitors from around the world.

Take a trip back in time by visiting the magnificent Hay House, an Italian Renaissance Revival style home built in 1855 and listed as a National Historic Landmark. The house features seven levels, Italian marble fireplaces, 30-foot ceilings with gold leafing and spectacular stained glass. The Cannonball House and Museum, built in 1853, was the only home in Macon struck by a cannonball during Stoneman’s Raid in 1864. Today, you can see restored period furnishings, a lush English garden and a shop offering Civil War merchandise.

The Georgia Music Hall of Fame highlights the state’s rich musical heritage. Here, music lovers listen to the tunes of Georgia’s famous artists, including R.E.M., Little Richard and the Allman Brothers. The museum also hosts one-of-a-kind memorabilia and artifacts. Athletic performances are celebrated at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, featuring interactive exhibits in football, basketball, golf and auto racing, and a remembrance of the 1996 Olympic Games.

Each March, Macon welcomes spring with the Cherry Blossom Festival. Amid the pink backdrop of more than 275,000 Yoshino cherry trees in bloom, you’ll encounter the perfect playground of live music, dances, contests, parades, arts, a tour of historic homes, fireworks and more. The Georgia State Fair has been held in Macon since 1851 and features regional arts and crafts, southern food and drink, and a carnival atmosphere with rides and games for all ages.

For the airborne explorer in all of us, the Museum of Aviation is must-see attraction. Travel 10 miles south of Macon to Robins Air Force Base and tour the grounds of this magnificent museum. Filled with historic aircraft, an interactive theater and many informative exhibits, the Museum of Aviation will have you flying high with excitement.

Vibrant, historic and full of legendary spirit – Macon eagerly awaits your visit.
