Athens

A unique blend of history and contemporary entertainment delivers an experience like no other in Athens, Georgia. Located just below the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this vibrant city defines sophisticated southern culture. From music for every taste to world-class restaurants, top-ranked collegiate sports to arts and nature, you’ll discover a welcoming cultural haven.

Music lovers have long recognized Athens as one of the best music scenes in the country. World-renowned artists, including R.E.M., the B-52’s and Widespread Panic have their roots in Athens. The city was named the number one college music scene by Rolling Stone magazine and dubbed “live music central” by The New York Times. World-famous venues, such as the 40 Watt Club and the Georgia Theatre, continue to attract up-and-coming acts and old favorites. AthFest attracts more than 120 bands that play on indoor and outdoor stages each year in late June. Athens’ musical heritage is about more than just rock and roll; noted African-American musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway performed at the Morton Theatre, a now-restored vaudeville venue. With jazz, classical, blues, country and rock performances available nearly every night, you’ll find Athens is rich with possibilities for music aficionados.

Sitting alongside the music venues in historic downtown Athens are some of the state’s most distinctive dining destinations. Hugh Acheson, chef/owner of Five and Ten restaurant, was recently named by Food & Wine magazine as one of America’s best new chefs. His continental-America cuisine has drawn raves from critics and put the spotlight on the city’s restaurants. The Last Resort Grill, EastWest Bistro and Harry Bissett’s offer fine dining, while true southern flavor can be found “automatically” at Weaver D’s. You can join students from the University of Georgia at local favorites like The Taco Stand, The Grill, Big City Bread and The Grit.

Cheering on one of the Georgia Bulldogs’ top-ranked athletic teams is a year-round draw to Athens, but you can also find opportunities to explore the great outdoors. Walk, jog, bike or blade through lush vegetation at Memorial Park, the North Oconee River Greenway, Oconee Forest Park, Sandy Creek Park and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. You can also take advantage of driving and walking tours of the city’s antebellum, Victorian and other period homes, or peruse the state’s official art collection at the Georgia Museum of Art located on the university campus.
