Cumberland Island and Jekyll Island named to Sherman’s Travel 'Top 20 Island Getaways for Summertime'

Georgia’s own Cumberland Island and Jekyll Island have been included in the “Top 20 Island Getaways for Summertime” by Sherman’s Travel Magazine. The list includes classic destinations and little-known treasures in the continental U.S., Canada and Europe. The complete list of “Top 20 Island Getaways for Summertime” is available in the June 2008 issue of Sherman’s Travel magazine.

Cumberland Island National Seashore’s pristine environment is only accessible only by ferry from St. Marys. This 17.5 mile-long island is well known for its wild horses, birding, remote beaches, salt marshes and historic structures. www.nps.gov/cuis

Jekyll Island is a popular destination for families and business travelers, offering a wealth of activities including beautiful beaches, golf, bike paths and the Summer Waves waterpark. Step back in time at the Jekyll Island National Historic Landmark District for a look at the lifestyle of America's wealthiest families in the Victorian era. www.jekyllisland.com.

Georgia’s Coast stretches approximately 100 miles between the Savannah and St. Marys Rivers. In this unique region you can wander isolated beaches, tranquil marshes and cobblestone streets. Sample low country delicacies like soft-shelled crabs and Brunswick stew, or sway to the soulful beat of a Gullah-Geechee song. Barrier islands, mysterious swamps and the easy rhythm of the coastal culture make Georgia’s coast an unforgettable experience.
