Many of the more than 150 historic theatres in Georgia are located in the downtown areas of cities that are being revitalized as tourist attractions.
By joining forces, they are looking at ways of sharing ideas and resources to enhance their economic viability.
The Tourism Foundation has joined forces with The Fox Theatre Institute (a leader in revitalization/renovation of historic theatres) to help guide these theatres, especially the historic theatres.
Georgia Applause Symposium held in March 2008 at the Averitt brought together more than 100 managers and directors of historic theatres around the state of Georgia. The symposium preceded a scheduled meeting of Downtown Development Authority manages, Mainstreet program managers and others who were looking at ways to revitalize the many (find word for festering) downtown areas. Many of these downtowns have historic theatres that can be centerpieces for revitalization.
