Regional Tourism Representatives

Regional Tourism Representatives

In October of 1978, seven Tourism Regional Representatives were hired to develop the first regional based tourism program in the U.S.

The Reps responsibility was to serve as a liaison for the Department, sharing information and education on the value of tourism, the importance of cooperative efforts and State Tourism office programs. In the eighties, research recommended realignment to nine travel regions.

As the Georgia travel industry has grown, the efforts of the Regional Representatives have evolved to meet the needs of the industry and their regions. While still providing the services of those earlier years, they have become more proactive in the development of new tourism products and packaging to attract visitors. Shifting from a strictly destination marketing agent, they have embraced interest-based marketing and the creation of statewide initiatives.

Working with communities they assist in the creation of tourism programs that are vital economic development factors for local, regional and state entities. The Regional representatives are a vital communications link between the Department and the Georgia Travel Industry for the future development of the state's tourism economy.
