Tourism

The tourism industry is a driving force in Georgia’s economy, and the revenues produced by this growing industry make the quality of life better for Georgians all across the state.

According to the latest economic impact numbers, 48 million visitors traveled to and though Georgia in 2003. These visitors spend an estimated $25 billion a year when visiting Georgia. What does this mean? Well, that $25 billion in visitor expenditures supported $6 billion in resident wages and supported more than 200,000 tourism-related jobs.

Tourism not only creates jobs for Georgians, but it also saves taxpayers money. According to the latest figures, Georgia’s state government realized nearly $708.5 million in state tax revenue from visitor expenditures. This equates to a $380 savings on state and local taxes per household.

Leading the charge for Georgia’s second largest industry is the Tourism Division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD). Research shows that every dollar used to promote tourism in Georgia generates eight new tourism dollars, and that’s a great return on Georgia’s investment.

The Tourism Division works to promote Georgia as a premier travel and tourism destination through innovative domestic and international marketing initiatives. These initiatives include visitor information center programs, online tourism information, annual tourism publications, co-operative advertising programs, public relations, global marketing/sales, local welcome center programs, state advertising campaigns, educational programming, and Governor Sonny Perdue’s Heritage Tourism Initiative.
