Why Logistics Matters: Kroger Groundbreaking

Announced June 12^th, the world's largest grocery retailer, Kroger, has chosen Clayton County to locate its newest distribution facility.

On Wednesday, Gov. Deal, local leaders and GDEcD broke ground for the one-million-square-foot distribution facility, to be located on a former U.S. Army base, Fort Gillem. While the project will create 120 jobs and more than $175 million in investment, it represents more than numbers.

This project explains why Georgia's solid logistics infrastructure, one of 11,000 logistics providers who employ 142,000 Georgians, is critical to driving economic development in Georgia.

Georgia's cold chain storage and cold chain logistics are top reasons why leading global companies such as Kroger continue to locate and expand here. Three of the top five global public refrigerated warehouse providers are in Georgia, as well as Nordic. The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, home to a 32,000-square-foot Atlanta Perishables Center, annually handles more than 700,000 tons of cargo via 14 cargo airlines.
