Getting to Know the Georgia Production Community

Independent filmmakers, actors, and those looking for industry networking and training opportunities in Georgia are fortunate to have some very strong local organizations to turn to for support. While not a comprehensive list, the three organizations below would be a great place to start, whether interested in grass-roots filmmaking, getting to know the Georgia production community, or looking for classes.

Atlanta Film Festival

Sure, they do run the annual Atlanta Film Festival, but the ATLFF is a year-round, non-profit media arts organization that specializes in film screenings, educational support and film and media events, including an annual screenplay competition. Join them the third Tuesday of each month at Manuel’s Tavern for “Eat, Drink and B-Indie:” networking, panel discussions, guest speakers, and new equipment demos over a cash bar. Or take in one of the many events at the ATLFF home base, the historic Plaza Theater in midtown.  Be sure to follow or sign up for the ATLFF newsletter!

Georgia Production Partnership

Formed in 1995 to act as a unified voice for companies and individuals who are active in the state’s film, video, music, and interactive game industries, the not-for-profit Georgia Production Partnership has grown to over 500 members. Monthly lunch meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month (except July) at Manuel’s Tavern. GPP also offers a PA Academy—an intensive two-day training course focused on entry level positions in the business—as well as workshops on Location Scouting, How to Be A Film Friendly Vendor, and introductory courses on protocol, terminology, resume building, and tools of the trade. Members and non-members may sign up for the GPP newsletter.

Women in Film and Television Atlanta

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2014, WIFTA is the second-oldest Women in Film and Television chapter in the world. The group is dedicated to improving the status and portrayal of women in film, television, video and other screen-based media, and is open to both women and men. WIFTA holds monthly member meetings and a variety of professional enrichment programs and workshops.
